Medieval Parkland Walks at Haddon Hall

Distance: 2 miles max

Terrain: The Medieval Park is an unspoilt, natural landscape with few paths. The terrain is very uneven in places and may be wet and/or muddy. You are advised to wear walking boots or other stout footwear. If you usually use walking poles when out on the fells, you may like to bring these with you. Please also bear in mind that the Peak District weather can be very changeable. For your safety and comfort we advise that you have warm, waterproof clothing available with you to wear if required.

Ascent and Descent: You will need to have a moderate level of fitness – approximately 200 m of height is climbed to the plateau and then again back down to the valley.
Toilets are available in the Stable Block at the start and finish of your walk.
Please note that dogs are not permitted on these walks.

The Medieval Park at Haddon Hall is a rare treasure, comprising 187 hectares of ancient pasture, woodlands, water meadows and river banks. In medieval times it was the private deer park for Haddon Hall and would have been essential in providing timber for building and firewood for heating and cooking, as well as hunting for food and leisure. Now it is managed entirely organically, the Peak District’s largest, oldest rewilding site, and its rich mosaic of habitats offers a safe haven for wildlife, including many rare and endangered species.

Our Medieval Parkland Walks provide a wonderful insight into this inspiring landscape and a rare chance to go behind-the-scenes into the normally private parkland that surrounds Haddon Hall. Walking at a gentle pace, with plenty of opportunities for observation and photography, our friendly guides, all experienced historians and/or ecologists, will share with you their knowledge of the plants and animals that live within the Medieval Park, as well as providing fascinating information about how the parkland was used for the support of the Hall and its household from the 14th Century.

Please note that this Walk takes place within the unspoilt, natural landscape of the Haddon Medieval Park. There are few paths, the terrain is uneven in places and may be wet and/or muddy. For your safety and comfort you are advised to wear walking boots or other stout footwear and to have warm, waterproof clothing available with you to wear if required on the day of your visit. Please bear in mind that we cannot guarantee good weather, nor can we guarantee what species you will see. Nature is unpredictable! The walk will go ahead unless it is deemed unsafe to proceed because of particularly heavy rain, high winds or stormy weather.

Your ticket for this Wildlife Walk entitles you to visit Haddon Hall and its beautiful gardens for £13.00 per person (usually £26.00) on the same day. This can be purchased at the Ticket Office after your walk – please simply show your booking reference to our staff.
