A Peak District-based wine merchant has been announced as the latest business to become an official Patron of Marketing Peak District & Derbyshire, just days after winning two of the wine industry’s most prestigious awards.
Hattersley Wines in Bakewell has pledged its support to the area’s official destination management organisation shortly after being crowned UK Small Independent Wine Merchant of the Year and Central England Wine Merchant of the Year at the 2022 International Wine Challenge Awards.
The awards are regarded as the ‘world's most meticulously judged wine competition’ and Hattersley Wines won praise from judges for its ‘commitment to supporting the local community during the pandemic’, as well as its ‘progressive and innovative approach to driving the wine trade forward’.
Hattersley Wines has now joined a dedicated network of tourism and hospitality businesses who share Marketing Peak District & Derbyshire’s core values to grow the area’s visitor economy and promote the Peak District and Derbyshire as a world-class tourism destination.
As a Patron, Hattersley Wines will support Marketing Peak District & Derbyshire’s ongoing mission to increase visitor spend, extend the tourism season and boost overnight stays, whilst helping to steer the industry through the post-pandemic recovery and shine a spotlight on the challenges faced by the hospitality sector.
Hattersley Wines is regarded as one of the UK’s finest independent wine merchants, stocking over 800 wines from across the world and supplying many of the region’s most renowned hotels, bars, pubs and restaurants.
Based in Milford, Bakewell, the family-run business was founded in 2004 by John and Diane Hattersley. With a long and distinguished career in the local hospitality industry, John grew up in two well-known Peak District hotels and ran several bars in and around Sheffield before opening the city’s first wine bar in 1975.
John then moved back to the Peak District where he opened successful restaurant, Aitch’s, in Bakewell before his lifelong passion for wine inspired him to found Hattersley Wines.
Under the guidance of John, his wife Diane, their daughter Sarah and a committed team, Hattersley Wines has grown to become a nationally renowned wine merchant with a successful retail shop, and a popular online sales platform.
Innovative developments in recent years have included the introduction of virtual wine tastings and a ‘honk for plonk’ wine collection service, which allowed customers to purchase wine from the car park of their Bakewell shop during lockdown restrictions.
Sarah Hattersley of Hattersley Wines says: “We are proud to be joining Marketing Peak District & Derbyshire as a Patron to champion all the area has to offer.
“Our business was born in the Peak District; we love where we live, we employ local people and still retain that local feel whilst putting Hattersley Wines not only at the top of the UK wine map, but also on the international map as well.
“With our strong knowledge of the hospitality sector and our roots firmly in the Peak District, we are excited to support the great network of tourism heroes here in our home region, many of whom we already consider partners and friends.
“Our two recent awards affirm that we are continuing to drive business forward in the area, whilst offering essential resources to work with other growing enterprises.”
Jo Dilley, Managing Director of Marketing Peak District & Derbyshire, says: “It’s fantastic to welcome Hattersley Wines on board as our latest Patron, hot on the heels of their fantastic wins at the International Wine Challenge Awards. Our vibrant hospitality sector and quality food and drink are what set the Peak District and Derbyshire apart as a destination, and Hattersley Wines are an excellent champion for the hospitality industry.
“Our Patrons are a core network of organisations who want to get behind us and share their collective expertise to champion the delivery of effective destination marketing for the area. Ensuring visitors and residents can enjoy fantastic food and drink experiences is fundamentally important to our visitor economy and the sector’s recovery and future growth.
“We look forward to working with Hattersley Wines and drawing on their experience and enthusiasm to help strengthen the destination, making it an even better place to live, work and visit.”
