Saving Buxton's Crescent: Renewing the Fifth Duke's Vision by Richard Tuffrey MBE-Heritage Open Days
Once the heart of Georgian Buxton, the Crescent fell into disrepair but was restored through a major partnership project
About
14th September 2025
The Crescent was originally built as the architectural centrepiece of the Duke of Devonshire’s fashionable Georgian spa town and, today, it once again holds the same status at the heart of Buxton’s town centre. However, there were darker years towards the end of the last century when the building lay empty, in disrepair and in need of a new use.
It took a wider vision, to regenerate Buxton as a significant spa destination, in order to restore the Crescent, the adjoining Natural Baths and Pump Room as a spa hotel complex and a visitor attraction. The Buxton Crescent and Thermal Spa project was a unique partnership which brought together two local authorities, national heritage funders and the private sector to restore the buildings in a way which was fit for the 21st century whilst preserving their historic character.
Richard was involved with the Crescent and Thermal Spa project from the start and will present how it came into being and then had to overcome a catalogue of seemingly insurmountable issues before the building’s were finally open to the public in 2021.
