GVLA Footplate Experiences

Experience heritage railways from a unique perspective with a Steam Footplate Experience, delivered by the Golden Valley Light Railway.

Taking place on GVLR's narrow-gauge railway at Swanwick Junction, this immersive experience allows participants to work alongside experienced volunteers on board Orenstein & Koppel locomotive No. 7529, gaining hands-on insight into the operation of a working steam locomotive.

The day begins with a safety briefing, followed by preparing the locomotive, lighting the fire and raising steam. Once working pressure is reached, participants take part in light engine movements before coupling to coaches and operating the train under close supervision.

Steam Footplate Experience Days are designed for adults aged 18 and over and offer an in-depth introduction to the skills, teamwork and heritage involved in running a steam railway. Experiences take place on selected dates throughout the year and must be booked in advance.

Refreshments and lunch are included, and participation supports the ongoing preservation of the railway and its associated transport heritage.
