St Peter's Church, Edensor
St. Peter's Church dates back to the 12th century and has a rich history, including its connection to the Devonshire family, who have long been associated with nearby Chatsworth House.
About
St Peter’s is situated on the Chatsworth Estate in the village of Edensor. The church especially the tower is a prominent landmark in the area and has a stunning interior to match its gothic revival exterior. It was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the decorated style and built in the 1860s replacing an early medieval church on the same site.
Some of the old features were incorporated into the south porch of the new church. The Cavendish Chapel contains a large 17th century monument to the two eldest sons of Bess of Hardwick and memorials to Lord Frederick Cavendish assassinated in Dublin in 1882. In the churchyard is the tomb of the designer Sir Joseph Paxton. You can also visit the Cavendish family graves including six dukes and Kathleen Cavendish, sister of John F Kennedy, at the top of the churchyard.
