Melbourne Church

St Michael and St Mary's is a Grade I listed Church of England parish church in Melbourne, Derbyshire.

About

Melbourne Church is a remarkable Norman church founded around 1125 by King Henry I. In 1133, this symbol of Royal power was given to the first Bishop of Carlisle.

Visitors can see a rare medieval wall painting showing two women crystal-ball gazing surrounded by devils; stone carvings including the ‘Melbourne cat’ and a Sheela-na-gig; a squint to see the high altar from the Lady Chapel; a medieval chest which stored silver and books; a 12th/13th century font; the tower where 12 bell-ropes hang and the Australian and Melbourne flags. Prime minister William Lamb Lord Melbourne gave his name to the capital city of Victoria. He lived at Melbourne Hall round the corner from the church, opposite Melbourne Pool.

The church is a vibrant part of the village, hosting concerts and community events. It has a wonderful choir and three weekly services which are inclusive and welcoming to all.
