Cardinal Consalvi and the Devonshire Connection at Chatsworth

Delve into the connection between Chatsworth and the art world of 19th Century Rome

About

20th February 2026 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

£15

Join us for a talk exploring the fascinating history of Elizabeth Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire's connection to Rome, and how it influenced the Chatsworth you see today, specifically the Sculpture Gallery.

In this expert-led talk, learn how Elizabeth’s close friendships with leading artists of the day—notably the sculptors Antonio Canova and Bertel Thorvaldsen—combined with the influence of Cardinal Consalvi’s artistic judgement, gave the 6th Duke access to Rome’s prestigious artistic circles, heavily influencing the 19th Century renovations of the house.

Tea and coffee will be available at the start of the session.
