Walk Up Weekends at The Heights of Abraham

To celebrate National Walking Month, join our living history actors on a historic walk up to the Heights!

    About

    2nd May 2025 - 17th May 2025

If the thought of travelling in a cable car has always put you off, but you’re keen to experience the amazing attractions, exhibitions, facilities and gardens at the Heights of Abraham summit, then you need to visit during our special walk-up weekends.

Normally we are unable to allow visitors to walk-up to the Heights, however, to celebrate National Walking Month this May, we’re hosting six special walk-up days on Fridays and Saturdays (2nd / 3rd / 9th / 10th / 16th 17th May 2025). Simply choose a day and an arrival time. There are only 50 tickets available for each session, so to avoid dissapointment, don't delay, book as soon as possible.

You’ll meet our one of our living history actors at the original West Lodge entrance to the Heights where you’ll hear about how the Victorian visitors made their way to the Heights, and learn about the landmarks along the way, including the mysterious Witches tree.

Once you reach the lower cavern network, you’ll be taken on an exclusive guided tour through the Rutland Cavern by a second historic guide, before learning more about famous visitors from the past from your third guide. You'll then make your way up the higher slope, past the woodland corner, and on to the summit where the visitor centre and exhibitions are located.

Once at the top you’re free to enjoy all the other attractions and exhibitions, or perhaps join other guests who came up by cable car. Your ticket also includes a unique National Waking Month certificate of achievement and a voucher for complimentary refreshments when you reach the summit. We recommend you allow at least four hours for your visit, and don't miss the new sound and light show in the Masson Cavern.

When you're ready to leave the estate you can either walk back down the hill or take the cable car.

    Points to consider:

You’ll need to make your own way to West Lodge to meet your guide. West lodge is a 20-minute walk from the main road in Matlock Bath. You will be sent full meeting details once your booking has been confirmed.

The Walk-up inevitably involves steep paths. However, there are resting points along the way, and the paths are made from tarmac.

Tickets will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
