St John the Baptist Church, Tideswell

The church is mediaeval and largely unchanged since the 14th Century.  It’s a surprisingly big church for the size of the village and it is well known for its lovely carvings, including many Green Men located around the Church.  It has a peal of 8 bells and the stained-glass windows are beautiful.  The head of the Padley Martyr Nicholas Garlick is reputedly buried in the Churchyard and there is a section of Commonwealth War Graves. We also have a new parish Pilgrimage – 8.5 miles – and you can get a badge!

Open Monday to Sunday - the Church is usually open between about 9am until about 4pm.

Getting there – Tideswell is easily accessible by road being just off the A623, and is on the Stagecoach 65 Bus Route between Buxton and Meadowhall, via Sheffield and the 272 Peak Link bus from Castleton to Bakewell.  The Hope Valley railway line has stops at Grindleford and Hope stations which are a few miles from Tideswell.  The village is popular with cyclists.

Tideswell is a lovely village with several excellent pubs serving traditional food plus an Italian Restaurant which is open in the evenings.  Tideswell Lounge Café is open 9am to 4pm every day but Tuesday. Tideswell is situated in the White Peak, about 6 miles from Bakewell and Buxton and near to the Chatsworth Estate, Haddon Hall, Thornbridge Hall, the Monsal Trail and other attractions. There are many varied and lovely walks from the village.
