The Anchor Inn

A welcoming Pub in the heart of the Peak District

About

History of the Anchor Inn

  • 16th Century Origins: The site originally began as a working farmstead.
  • Became an Alehouse (1699): Because of its strategic location along an ancient highway (Castleton Lane), the farmstead expanded into an alehouse in 1699.
  • Turnpike & Coaching Era: In the late 1700s, the nearby roads were turned into turnpikes, transforming the alehouse into a major staging and coaching inn for pack horses and carriers.
  • Modern Ownership: Purchased in the 1960s by Robinsons Brewery, the pub has undergone sympathetic refurbishments while preserving its 300+ year legacy.

Description & Vibe

  • Atmosphere: A quintessential countryside pub featuring traditional stone walls, rustic decor, and open fires for the colder months.
  • Food & Drink: Known for cask ales and a diverse menu featuring classic pub mains, a steak house, and a "rum shack".
  • Quirks: The pub heavily embraces its farming roots and famously features a dedicated tractor parking bay.
