Castleton Geology Walk: Winnats Pass, Mam Tor & Cave Dale with Lithosphere Expeditions
A full-day guided geology walk around Castleton with a qualified geologist. We cover Winnats Pass, Mam Tor, Cave Dale, Odin Mine and Blue John. Sat 22 Aug, 10am to 3pm. £50pp, open group, meets at Castleton Visitor Centre.

An Earth science themed guided walk exploring the geology of Castleton, taking in the limestone reef, Mam Tor with its famous landslip and broken road, and the mineral veins that shaped this stretch of the Hope Valley. Led by Aaron, a master's student in Environmental Science with a geology background, a qualified Mountain Leader and Cave and Mine Leader.
What we'll see
- Winnats Pass, a gorge cut through Carboniferous reef limestone
- Mam Tor and the active landslip on its eastern face, the "Shivering Mountain"
- Cave Dale, a dry limestone gorge with fossils in the walls
- Peak Cavern, one of Castleton's show caves
- Odin Mine, one of the oldest lead mines in England
- Treak Cliff Cavern and the Blue John fluorite veins
- Windy Knoll
- The Castleton anticline

- Meet: Castleton Visitor Centre
- Distance: 11 to 15km, depending on the group
- Price: £50 per person
