Come and see a 175 year old steam powered beam engine pump 4 tons of water at a time into the Cromford Canal.For more details see the following link https://tinyurl.com/2xcfk7h7, or watch a video at youtu.be/iHaD4_DGOIcIn the boiler house, steam is produced in one of two locomotive type stationary boilers, installed in about 1900.In the engine house, the steam is used to raise a four foot diameter plunger 9 feet up, causing water from the river in a tunnel under the plunger to be sucked up with it. The plunger then falls, pushing four tons of water at a time up into the canal. You can walk around the engine house to see the pump in action and go to the top of the building and view the impressive 30 ton beam and wonder how the Victorians go it in!A team of volunteers will be on hand to answer any questions you may haveThe pump will be in steam from 12pm to 4.30 pmAdmission is free, but donations will be gratefully received.
