Torr Vale Mill - a Grade II* listed cotton mill and a true piece of British history
About
12th September 2025 - 14th September 2025
Torr Vale Mill - a Grade II* listed cotton mill and a true piece of British history. Sympathetically renovated in an idyllic setting, explore the transformed buildings, local art, cotton looms, and enjoy a walk around the local conservation area.
Torr Vale Mill is recorded as the longest continuous period of cotton production in Britain, ending trade 2000. Family-owned; it’s a collection of adjoining buildings and prime examples of multi-phase integration from the 1780s to the late 1900s. It’s rich in features from its past industrial heritage including brick vaulted ceilings, large spacious rooms, headrace arches, cast iron columns and bearing boxes, and not forgetting some of the cotton looms and the original mill chimney. The Mill nestles in the Goyt Valley within New Mills – a highly creative community. Much of the mill has now been renovated and the internals are usually closed to the public.
In the main Cotton Room, visitors will see footage of the mill at work, work of local artists, demonstrations on small cotton looms and colouring activities for children. Staff will be on hand to provide commentary about the 250 year history of the mill including its great fire of 2001 showing how tragedy can be transformed into triumph and of how the mill is once again water-powered through new technology. Visitors can then venture to the previously unseen top floor of the mill (The Needlework Room), where they will find more of the history of Torr Vale Mill and can enjoy the views. From the yard, guests can visit the transformed outbuildings and treat themselves to a coffee at the bar/restaurant and beautiful produce from the cheese and craft beer shop.
