YHA Castleton Social Walk

Discovery and connection

We will walk through Castleton village and follow a field path to the site of the Roman lead mine and crushing circle, up to Hollins Cross and along a path just below the Great Ridge in the direction of Lose Hill, then through a wooded area with splendid views of the Hope Valley. There’s then a steep descent through the fields back to YHA Castleton at Losehill Hall.

Please note that the route will be very much dependent on the weather conditions on the day and an alternative route will be available if needed. It’s a steep climb from Castleton to Hollins Cross, so good boots, appropriate clothing and lunch with plenty of fluid are essential.

During the walk we’ll have an overview of the history of Mam Tor and the geology that has caused the landslip, including lead mining and the Blue John stone, as well as the present-day difficulties of managing such a popular area.
