Explore Wingfield Station
Start your Amber Valley adventure at Wingfield Station, now a heritage centre and tea rooms. Opened in 1840, this beautifully restored station offers a glimpse into the golden age of rail travel and provides a unique welcome to the area.
Discover Local Flavours
Head into Belper for a bite to eat, whatever your tastes and budget there’s always something delicious to tuck into at one of the many independent eateries. In early summer and autumn you can enjoy one of Derbyshire’s best food festivals which celebrate all things tasty, the festival runs twice a year in the Summer & Autumn.
Industrial Revolution Stories
Head to Strutt's North Mill in Belper, part of the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site. This pioneering cotton mill tells the story of the Industrial Revolution and the innovations that changed the world. Take the time to explore the beautiful River Gardens, where you can hire rowing boats during the summer months or simply enjoy a coffee by the River Derwent.
From here, take a stroll through Belper's historic streets before travelling to Heage Windmill. Lovingly restored and standing proudly on the hillside, Heage Windmill is the only working stone-towered, six-sailed windmill in England. On milling days, visitors can see the machinery in action and learn about traditional flour production.
Motoring Memories at the Great British Car Journey
Begin the day at the Great British Car Journey in Ambergate. This award-winning attraction charts the story of Britain's motoring heritage through more than 130 classic vehicles. To make the experience even more memorable, book a Drive Dad's Car experience and take a nostalgic drive in a classic British vehicle. Whether it's a Ford Escort, Austin Mini or another motoring icon, it's a unique way to relive decades of automotive history.
Families looking for an off-road adventure can also enjoy the Mini Land Rover Adventure, where younger visitors can get behind the wheel of specially designed miniature Land Rovers.
Sample the award winning Wireworks Whisky
Right next door is White Peak Distillery, established in 2016 this craft distillery produces award-winning Wire Works Whisky, Shining Cliff Gin and rum with a proud focus on their unique Derbyshire heritage. Book on a tour to learn more and sample the product! (Tours available Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays).
Heritage Railways and Trams
Amber Valley is a paradise for transport enthusiasts, so spend the afternoon onboard a heritage train, there are 2 fantastic heritage railway experiences to choose from.
At Midland Railway – Butterley, ride vintage trains, explore historic railway buildings and discover one of the country's most important collections of railway heritage. Alternatively, board a train on the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway, which runs through beautiful Derbyshire countryside between Wirksworth and Duffield.
If time allows, continue to the National Tramway Museum at Crich. Home to a world-renowned collection of vintage trams, visitors can ride through a recreated period village street and experience over a century of transport history.
Stately Homes and Landscapes
For visitors seeking grand architecture and parkland, Kedleston Hall offers an unforgettable alternative. This spectacular National Trust property combines lavish interiors, fascinating history and extensive landscaped grounds designed by Capability Brown.
Getting Around by Public Transport
With rail links from nearby stations including Belper, Ambergate and Duffield, it's easy to enjoy a car free Derbyshire adventure. Amber Valley is surprisingly easy to explore without a car, regular rail services connect Derby, Belper, Ambergate and Chesterfield, while local bus routes link many of the area's major attractions.
Stay in Belper
Belper makes an excellent base for an overnight stay, with a range of accommodation including cosy cottages, welcoming pubs and woodland hostels. Spend the evening exploring the town's vibrant food scene or catch a movie at the independent picture house The Ritz Cinema, housed in a beautiful 1920s Art Deco building, The Ritz has been lovingly restored to offer a unique and nostalgic cinema experience..
