Strutt's North Mill
This 1804, iron-framed, fire-proof cotton spinning mill is the forerunner of the modern skyscraper.
About
This 1804 iron-framed, fire-proof cotton spinning mill, designed by William Strutt, was the forerunner of the modern skyscraper. The on-site museum is no longer open to the public but the Belper North Mill Trust still offers guided external tours of the site, plus the basement area. See the Trust’s website for details.
The mills at Belper were powered by the River Derwent and lie within the scenic Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. The Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site contains a fascinating series of mill complexes, the watercourses that powered them and the settlements developed for the workers.
