About
Bakewell’s first stone church was Anglo-Saxon, in use by 949, which probably replaced a wooden church. It was demolished by the Normans who completed a new, larger church by 1135. It was the Mother Church, serving much of the Peak District. 19th century rebuilding revealed many Anglo-Saxon stones, displayed in the south porch, with comprehensive signage.
Inside the church is a 14th century stone font, 13th century sedilia and a rare double piscina. The west wall is original Norman with typical arches. There are heraldic shields, a 14th century parish chest and the renowned Foljambe monument. The chancel has 20 misericords, some of which are mediaeval. The Newark contains the tombs of Vernon and Manners families, ancestors of the Dukes of Rutland.
In the churchyard are two Anglo-Saxon cross shafts, five stone coffins, the Norman west door and gravestones of White Watson and Ann greaves.
