About
Lovingly restored, award-winning Darley House combines timeless Georgian elegance with modern comfort. Winner of Self Catering Accommodation of the Year at the Visit Peak District Tourism Awards 2026, the house is perfect for family gatherings, special celebrations and memorable get-togethers.
With four elegant reception rooms and a splendid, spacious kitchen/dining area Darley House is perfect for both sociable gatherings and quieter moments of retreat. Beautifully proportioned interiors, contemporary design and underfloor heating create a seamless blend of historic grandeur, warmth and calm.
Set on the edge of the Peak District National Park between Matlock and Bakewell, Darley House is ideally located for exploring iconic landmarks such as Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall. The surrounding area offers beautiful walks through the Dales, cycling along former railway lines, and a wide range of outdoor pursuits. The region’s rich heritage as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution can be discovered at sites such as Cromford Mill. For those seeking adventure, Alton Towers is within easy reach.
For a more relaxed pace, Darley House offers exceptional grounds to enjoy. Play croquet on the formal lawn, pétanque on the gravel pathways, or table tennis in the games room. Wander through private Victorian walkways, enjoy an aperitif on the terrace, or take in sweeping views of the rolling hills from the grand balustraded garden terrace designed by Sir Joseph Paxton. A hot tub can also be arranged to enhance your stay.
Garden lovers will appreciate the remarkable collection of mature specimen trees. Ancient yews frame the boundary, a magnificent copper beech crowns the upper garden, and rare species including giant redwood and ginkgo biloba add an exotic flourish.
Lucy, your host, takes a highly personalised approach and can help curate your stay, offering recommendations and connections for private chefs, local activities and wellness experiences, ensuring each visit feels both effortless and special.

Frequently asked questions
- What is nearby and where are you located in the Peak District?
Darley House is located in Darley Dale, between Matlock and Bakewell, on the south-eastern edge of the Peak District National Park. We are close to Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Matlock Bath, the Monsal Trail and the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site, with walks, cycling routes and the Peak Rail heritage railway nearby.
- How many guests can stay?
Darley House sleeps up to 14 guests, plus two infants in cots, across six bedrooms and five bathrooms. The layout includes king-size, twin and bunk rooms, with two of the en-suite bedrooms also offering an additional single bed, making the house ideal for multi-generational family gatherings and group stays.
- What makes the house and gardens unique?
We’re passionate about helping guests experience the very best of the Peak District and love creating truly memorable, bespoke stays. This personalised approach was recognised with our Gold Award for Best Self-Catering Accommodation from Visit Peak District.
Darley House’s unique character, however, has much deeper roots. The one-acre historic gardens were originally laid out by Sir Joseph Paxton, former Head Gardener at Chatsworth and designer of the Crystal Palace. Today, guests can enjoy the beautiful gardens we continue to restore and care for, including two ginkgo biloba trees planted by Paxton himself.
- Can you help arrange special occasions and celebrations?
Many of our guests come to celebrate a special occasion or simply spend quality time together with family and friends, and we love helping make those stays feel truly memorable. We’re very happy to recommend trusted local suppliers including private chefs, florists, photographers, cake makers, hot tub hire, wellness practitioners and outdoor activity specialists.
- Do you offer EV charging and sustainable features?
Darley House has a 22kW Zappi EV charger for guest use, solar panels, eco-friendly products and recycling facilities. The gardens are managed with biodiversity in mind, including wildlife-friendly planting and a pond that supports local wildlife.
- Is the house suitable for wellness retreats or group experiences?
Darley House is ideal for wellness retreats, creative workshops and group stays, with a large games room that can be used as a yoga or wellbeing studio overlooking the gardens.
We can also recommend local yoga teachers, wellness practitioners and private chefs, including plant-based catering options.
- Are there walks, pubs and cafés nearby?
Yes. Guests can walk directly from Darley House to the River Derwent, the White Peak Loop trail and the popular pubs at Darley Bridge. We are within walking distance of cafés, shops and local amenities in Darley Dale.
- How easy is it to get there by public transport?
Matlock railway station is just 5 minutes away, with rail connections via Derby to destinations across the UK, while Chesterfield station, around 25 minutes away, offers direct services to several major cities including London.
East Midlands and Manchester airports are both within 1–1.5 hours’ drive, and local bus services connect Darley Dale with Bakewell, Matlock and Chatsworth. We’re also happy to recommend reliable local taxi companies, including larger vehicles for walking groups, retreats and day trips around the Peak District.
