Edale Parish Church

Edale Parish Church has been a place for community worship, cultural events, and a visitor attraction for many years.  It is a Grade II listed building, completed in 1889 and little altered since. Edale village lies at the start of the Pennine Way, and the church stands as a way marker en-route to the moors.

There are weekly communion services at 1000. Our church provides a space for quiet contemplation but also for many concerts and other cultural and social events, often with capacity audiences.

Inside you can find heritage information banners and a set of short videos about the area and the church’s history. These, along with temporary exhibitions, make additional attractions to see along with three Ninian Comper stained glass windows, some interesting wooden and stone memorials and, outside, the beautiful Peace Garden, with benches to enjoy the view and have lunch.

Getting here: There are hourly trains stopping at Edale from Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield. There is also (to be reconfirmed in October) a No 62 bus going 3 times a day from Buxton to Edale, and 6 times a day from Edale to Castleton (https://bustimes.org/services/62-buxton-castleton)

What's nearby: Edale has two cafes, a village shop and two pubs, as well as several camping sites. It has well marked footpaths to the Iron Age hill fort at Mam Tor, to the south, and to the north near the Nag's Head pub turn left to start on the Pennine Way. A walk around the edge of the northern hills surrounding Edale (the plateau at the top is called Kinder Scout) takes about 3 hours. Free maps are available at the Penny Pot cafe near the station.

Did you know? There is a mysterious painting in the Chancel near the altar. Experts haved looked at it and were not be able to come to a conclusion as to how old it is or where it comes from. It is a picture of the Adoration of the Magi and certainly pre-dates the current church. If you have any thoughts on its age and who painted it, do drop us a line!
