    About

    14th May 2026 - 20th May 2026

Nestled in the heart of Derbyshire, Tissington Village is renowned for its picturesque charm and rich traditions. One of the most celebrated events in the village is the annual Well Dressing festival, a unique and captivating tradition that dates back centuries.

Well dressing is an ancient custom that involves decorating wells and springs with intricate and beautiful designs made from natural materials such as flowers, petals, leaves, and seeds. This tradition is believed to have originated as a way of giving thanks for clean water.

The making of the Wells starts the weekend before the Wells go up Sunday 10 May. (TBC) only the Hall Well and Hands Well are available to view as they are made in sheds in the centre of the village.

All 6 of the Wells will be up on Thursday 14 May for the public to view.  They will come down 7 days later, evening of Wednesday 20 May.

The Blessing of the Wells is at 11.30am Thursday 14 May

    In 2025, there were eight:

    • 1. Hands Well at the north end of the village, near the Post Office
    • 2. Children’s Well on Rakes Lane, nearly opposite Hands Well. A small additional dressing located nearby.
    • 3. Hall Well opposite Tissington Hall
    • 4. Yew Tree Well at the south end of the village, near the start of The Avenue leading to Tissington Gates
    • 5. Town Well at the eastern end of the Village Green, near the duck pond
    • 6. Coffin Well in the garden of a house on Chapel Lane (follow the signs via a footpath from the Town Well)
    • 7. FitzHerbert CE Primary School Well Dressing outside a house on The Gin, a short distance north of Hands Well

Tissington is located to the east of the A515 Ashbourne to Buxton road, north of Fenny Bentley.
