At the Centre of It All
An Insider’s Guide to the East Midlands: By Cara Thompson & Rob Kenning
There’s something grounding about being right in the middle of things. Not rushing through. Not skirting the edges. Just arriving. The East Midlands, encompassing Nottinghamshire city and county, Derby and Derbyshire, sits at the literal centre of England. But more than that, it’s a place where culture, countryside and creativity meet, effortlessly and accessibly. Less travel. More living.
Being at the centre of it all isn’t just a feeling here, it’s a fact.
Nottinghamshire is best experienced from the inside out. Step off the train and you’re already immersed, no transfers, no taxis, just a short walk into the city’s rhythm. For me, this place is all about creative energy and community.
You feel it in Hockley, the beating heart of indie culture. In the roar of a live crowd at Rock City or the Motorpoint Arena. In the bold, challenging ideas at Nottingham Contemporary. On match day at Notts County or Trent Bridge, when the city moves as one.
Nottinghamshire city and county invite you to take part, not just observe.
One of the joys of Nottinghamshire is how easy it is to explore without a car. The tram glides from the station to major attractions like Lakeside Arts and New Art Exchange, while trains carry you straight into Sherwood Forest. Beneath ancient oaks, history feels alive. Try archery here and you’re not just watching the legend of Robin Hood; you’re stepping into it.
You don’t need a car to feel free in Nottinghamshire city and county, it opens itself up to you.
Take time to explore Newark and Southwell, historic market towns rich in heritage and character.
Eat locally. Wander slowly. Let the destination reveal itself. This is a place that rewards curiosity.
Derby is a city that’s always been quietly ahead of its time.
Derby: Art, Innovation and Green Pauses
Derby is just a short train ride from Nottingham, but it has its own distinctive heartbeat. A city shaped by invention and imagination, it wears its innovation lightly.
At Derby Museum & Art Gallery, Joseph Wright’s dramatic use of light still feels radical centuries on. Exhibitions like Joseph Wright: Life on Paper continue that legacy of experimentation and quiet brilliance.
When I need a pause, I head to Electric Daisy, an urban garden tucked right into the city centre. Derby feels walkable, thoughtful and confident. It doesn’t shout, but it stays with you.
The Peak District isn’t about ticking off viewpoints; it’s about truly being in the landscape.
The Peak District: Finding the Quiet Centre
Derby is also the gateway to the Peak District, one of the UK’s most accessible national parks by rail. Step off the train and, within minutes, you’re surrounded by open moorland, limestone valleys and expansive skies.
My advice? Go beyond the honeypots. Walk early. Take the quieter paths around places like the Derwent Valley or the edges of Baslow. Notice the birdsong, the dry-stone walls, the shifting light.
And don’t miss the food. Bakewell isn’t just a name, it’s a ritual. Try the pudding warm from a local bakery. For something more refined, Fischer’s in Baslow showcases Derbyshire produce at its best, with views that remind you why this landscape matters.
Some of the best moments in the Peaks happen when you slow down and let the place lead.
Stay Central, Travel Light
Whether you’re based in Nottingham, Derby, or tucked away in a treetop lodge in the Peak District, the East Midlands invites you to slow down and stay connected - to place, people and the moment.
An East Midlands short break truly puts you at the centre of it all - geographically, creatively and consciously.
This is a region where you can be centre stage one day, and completely off grid the next
