About
The UK's number one forest adventure in the heart of the Peak District. Located on the edge of this beautiful spa town, our high ropes experience at Buxton is one of Go Ape's highest. We're nestled in the heart of Derbyshire - adjacent to Poole's Cavern - which is also well worth a visit.
Treetop Challenge is an exhilarating self-guided 2-3 journey through the forest canopy. It includes a detailed safety brief from one of our qualified instructors before you set off into the tree tops. You'll get to clamber up rope ladders, traverse tricky crossings, swing into giant cargo nets and ride super-fast zip wires.
Built on the hilltops, Go Ape Buxton offers breath-taking views. It also features multiple tree-to-tree ziplines. An enjoyable day out for friends and older families alike, enjoy 2-3 hours of non-stop action-packed fun. Scramble up rope ladders, tackle tree top obstacles, experience our famous ziplines and take on one of the UK's biggest Tarzan Swings.
We're an all-weather activity so forget your glad rags. Old, comfy clothing is your best bet. Dress for the elements. And we wouldn't recommend wearing white. Trust us. Our woodchip landing sites play dirty!

Frequently asked questions
- Where is Go Ape Buxton located?
Go Ape Buxton is on the edge of Buxton in the Peak District National Park, Derbyshire, just off Green Lane in Grinlow Woods. Follow signs for Poole's Cavern. The entrance to our cabin is on the far side of the car park, opposite to the Poole's Cavern Visitor centre.
- Is there parking at Go Ape Buxton?
Our car park operates a pay & display system (parking is free for Blue Badge holders and BCA Oak Members). Green Lane, Buxton, Derbyshire, SK17 9DH.
- Where are the nearest toilets?
Toilets are available at the visitor centre, just a short walk from our cabin, in Poole's Cavern Visitor centre. There are no toilets out on the course, so we recommend using them before starting your activity.
- Is there somewhere to store my belongings?
We have space for small items at the cabin, but storage is not secure, so belongings are left at your own risk. We recommend bringing as little as possible.
- Are there any cafes or shops on site?
Yes, you'll find a café in the Poole's Cavern Visitor Centre, serving drinks, snacks and light meals. There is also a Visitor Centre shop where you can pick up refreshments or gifts. Opening times may vary seasonally.
- Are dogs allowed?
Yes, well-behaved dogs are welcome on-site and must be kept on leads. Please note that dogs are not able to join you on the course. There are lots of walks through the woods also for your four-legged friends to enjoy.
- Is the site accessible for wheelchairs or pushchairs?
The main paths around the site are gravel and uneven, with some slopes. The path near sections 4 and 5 of our high ropes course, along the drystone wall, is the flattest. Wheelchairs and pushchairs can access the cabin and spectator areas, but some woodland paths may be challenging in wet weather. If you have any specific accessibility needs, please contact us before your visit so we can help.
- Can I bring a camera?
Please do! You're going to want to capture these moments to share. We do ask that phones taken to height are attached to you to minimise the risk of dropping them. Our courses pass over paths and playgrounds so it's important that we are thinking of others. Phone pouches with a lanyard are available to buy from our cabins for £6, but used at your own risk.
If you'd like to take a camera, please discuss with your instructor on arrival to make sure it is not too bulky and can be safely attached. Go Ape will not be responsible for any damage sustained to personal equipment.
- Can I do Go Ape if I'm pregnant?
For the safety of both mother and child, Go Ape strongly recommends that pregnant women do not take part in our adventures.
Our adventures are robust physical activities involving climbing, balancing, and zipping, which naturally carry a degree of risk. While we don't want to be discriminatory, we are not medical experts.
We strongly encourage you to seek advice from your doctor before deciding to participate.
If, after consulting your doctor, you choose to proceed, we will require you to formally declare your pregnancy to a staff member and sign a specific disclaimer acknowledging that:
"I have made Go Ape aware that I am pregnant and, as a result, Go Ape has recommended that I do not take part on the course. However, I have decided to take part on the course in the full knowledge that this may incur risks to my unborn child."
We want you to have a safe and wonderful experience, so please prioritise medical advice when making this decision!
- Can I wear a bumbag or backpack at height?
Bumbags and backpacks aren't permitted on the course as they may increase your risk of injury or get in the way of your harness. A lanyard and phone pouch can be purchased online at the time of booking or on the day from the Go Ape cabin (subject to availability). If you need to carry any medication with you, please let a member of staff know who will be able to provide you with a pouch which can be attached to your harness.
We recommend that non-essential items and bags are left somewhere safe such as in your car. Small items such as car keys can be left in the Go Ape cabin.
- Do I need to be fit and strong?
Go Ape designs its adventures to be as accessible as possible. Our high ropes courses require a degree of physical fitness but if you can climb up a rope ladder you will be fine.
- Do I need to book in advance?
We strongly recommend booking your adventure online or by phone before travelling.
Go Ape sessions often sell out, especially during weekends and peak season. If you wait until you arrive, we cannot guarantee there will be any spaces left, and we genuinely hate sending people away disappointed! Book ahead to secure your spot.
- What happens in bad weather?
Go Ape is an excellent wet weather activity. Our courses are substantially sheltered from rain and wind by the trees themselves so as long as you are appropriately dressed for the weather you should still have great memories of your experience. The course remains open in all weathers, except thick ice, thunderstorms and gales. Rain makes the course muddier than usual which can add to the fun, but you might want dry clothes to change into for the journey home.
If we have to close for unsafe weather conditions, we will offer you a refund, credit note or reschedule your booking. If unsafe weather is forecasted we will aim to make the decision as early as possible, and will do our best to contact you to try and save you a wasted journey.
- What should I wear?
Dress for the weather to stay warm and dry in colder weather, and sunscreen and a sunhat if it's sunny. Closed-toe and closed-heel shoes are essential (trainers recommended). No sandals. No bare waists for harness safety and comfort. Gloves are recommended (available for purchase at the cabin). Phone pouches are required if you wish to take photos of your adventure (available for purchase at the cabin).
